Work has been completed with Swiss chard, spinach, radish, and lettuce plants grown under different lighting sources for 28 days. Three lamp banks represented broad-spectrum white light sources (microwave, high-pressure sodium, and cool white fluorescent). Past tests also included separate LED arrays filled with a given peak wavelength of red (664, 666, 676, 688 nanometers) LEDs. Each LED array contained single rows of blue LEDs (474 nanometers) evenly distributed within the multiple rows of red LEDs. The relative stoichiometry of photosystem I and II reaction centers (which are responsible for the initial conversion of light energy in plants) was measured for each treatment. Additonal measurements throughout growth, including plant chlorophyll fluorescence, accessory pigment concentrations, and responses of photosynthetic rate to light and carbon dioxide levels, were incorporated.
The combination of red and blue light proved to be an effective lighting source for growing spinach, radish, and lettuce. However, the addition of green light may promote increased plant growth since green light penetrates the plant canopy better than red or blue

Lighting
Method: high intensity red (670 nm) and blue (470 nm) light emitting diodes (LEDs)
Intensity: 0 - 450 μmol/m2/s for red and 0 - 50 μmol/m2/s for blue, measured at bottom of the chamber
Control: photon flux programmably controlled with ± 5% of setpoint
Uniformity: ± 10 % within plane, 10 cm from the light source

Here's the truth: Ghastly expensive LED lighting systems provide about the
same benefit to plants as a cheap incadescent lightbulb, which share
limited spectrum, but they do it over a smaller area. And the worst
flourescent light would have a far better spectrum for plants than the
best LED light offered for use over plants. Only a moron would pay
humongus dollars for the same or smaller benefit obtainable from an
ordinary light.
But then, the #1 crop in Bend Oregon is marijuana (which is why this same
spammer also deposited his spam-whoppers alt.drugs.pot ). The claims for
these lights that they use less electricity (not true where getting
sufficient light to plants is concerned) & they generate no heat (as
though flourescents do) are aimed at the paranoia of felons who know
helecoptors take infra-red photos of roofs to detect hot-spots & the
electric company monitors sudden increases in electricity to catch
basement growers. For such felons, the claims made for these LEDs are of
supreme importance, even if they don't actually get the protection from
the law they hope to get by using light emitting diodes
Ciekawe jak z tym jest ?? ;)

This pages states "And both [incandescent and fluorescent lamps]
gobble up electrical power -- a precious commodity in space -- while
generating heat, which must be dispelled from closed environments such
as spaceships and space stations." They then go on to suggest LEDs as
an alternative. Since LEDs are far less efficient then fluorescent
lamps, I can't take this as a serious discussion of the technical
issues.
Now, LEDs might have some advantage IF light in narrow wavelength
bands were more efficient for photosynthesis than broad band light,
but the same site goes on to recommend sulfur lamps, which are a broad
band source. Also, while the sulfur lamp itself may be very efficient,
by the time you include the losses in the magnetron used to generate
the 2.4 GHz power and the resonant cavity used to contain the energy
used to excite the lamp, its efficiency is no higher than other HID
sources.

Well, seems like the same information. recommends LEDs and sulfur
lamps.
BTW- IF it is shown that certain wavelength bands are used more
efficiently by plants than other bands, the most efficient way to
generate that light would probably be with a fluorescent lamp using a
narrow band phosphor matched to the needs of the plants.
I know that NASA doesn't like fluorescent lamps in space applications
because of the possibility of mercury contamination if the lamp
breaks. In this respect, both LEDs and the sulfur lamp are better
choices because neither uses mercury. However, the less energy
argument is incorrect.
